Managing asbestos safely: what dutyholders need to know in 2026
From 1 to 7 April, organisations across the UK are recognising Global Asbestos Awareness Week – an important campaign aimed at reinforcing the responsibility to manage asbestos safely and effectively.
While asbestos was banned in the UK nearly 25 years ago, it remains a significant risk. It is still responsible for approximately 5,000 deaths each year in Great Britain, making it one of the leading causes of work-related fatalities. The legacy of asbestos use continues to affect buildings, infrastructure and those responsible for maintaining them.
This week serves as a timely reminder for dutyholders to review how asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), and presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACMs), are being managed within their premises.
Understanding your responsibilities
Effective asbestos management is centred on compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, alongside evolving enforcement expectations outlined in recent Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.
However, compliance goes beyond documentation – it requires ongoing monitoring, clear accountability and a proactive approach to risk management.
Across the Celnor Group, our specialist companies including APEC Environmental, Vintec Laboratories and Riverside Environmental Services support clients nationwide with asbestos surveying, testing, consultancy and compliance services. By combining technical expertise with local delivery, the Group ensures consistent, high-quality support across a wide range of sectors and geographies.
Key questions to consider
As part of Global Asbestos Awareness Week, organisations are encouraged to assess their current approach by asking the following:
Are your asbestos surveys and registers up to date?
Ensure all areas have been surveyed, including any previously excluded spaces. Your asbestos register should accurately reflect current conditions and be regularly reviewed.
Has your asbestos management plan been reviewed?
Your plan should demonstrate active monitoring of ACMs and clearly define roles and responsibilities. Recent HSE updates place increased emphasis on evidence of ongoing management.
Are employees at risk of exposure?
If colleagues are likely to encounter ACMs or PACMs during their work, they must be appropriately trained and understand the correct procedures to follow.
When was your last condition assessment carried out?
Changes in building use, condition or occupancy can impact asbestos risk. Any updates should be reflected in your management plan. Additionally, ensure contractor activity in affected areas is properly controlled and documented.
Are your records easily accessible?
All relevant documentation – including surveys, registers, management plans, training records and removal certificates – must be up to date and readily available when required.
