A F Howland joins Celnor to strengthen Geoenvironmental division

January 2024

Celnor has acquired Geotechnical Engineering company, A F Howland Associates.

Simon Parrington, Celnor founder and Group CEO, commented, “A F Howland Associates is a great business with many years’ experience in geotechnical engineering. It fits perfectly into our geoenvironmental division alongside GIP and Brownfield Solutions, giving us additional capability and extending our geographic coverage into East Anglia.  We are delighted to welcome Al and his team to Celnor and look forward to working with them as they continue to build their business.”

A F Howland Associates is headquartered in Norwich with an additional base in Long Melford, Suffolk. It provides independent engineering solutions for both soft and hard rock conditions for roads and highways, tunnels, earthworks, slope stability and foundations. Other services include management contracting for civil engineering investigations and construction projects, as well as full geotechnical consultancy.

Al Howland, founder and MD of A F Howland Associates is looking forward to working with Celnor. “Being part of a larger group will accelerate our business growth and give us the opportunity to work alongside other likeminded businesses in our industry. We felt that Celnor offered the advantage of allowing us to remain independent, but with support when we need it. Our new ownership structure will bring benefits to both the business and to our customers.”

Simon Clennell-Jones, Divisional MD for Geoenvironmental at Celnor, said, “The rapid growth of our geoenvironmental division reflects the increasing demand for high-quality commercially focused geotechnical, ground investigation and geoenvironmental services. With GIP, Brownfield Solutions and now A F Howland Associates, Celnor is in a strong position to service this growing market.”
